Katelyn was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in January 2014 when she was 13. After fighting cancer for a year and having an above the knee amputation, she relapsed in 2015 in her lungs. In 2016 she developed Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome due to chemo toxicity. She was in a medical induced coma for 2 months and eventually had to have a trach placed. She was in the hospital for 6 months due to ARDS. After extensive rehab, the trach was removed 11 months later. In 2019, due to multiple lung surgeries to remove cancer and damage due to being on a ventilator for so long, Katelyn developed MAC infection in her lungs. Her infection became resistant to several medicines so she had her left lung removed in July 2023. Since this surgery, she has been in and out of the ER and hospital more than 20 times due to unexplained severe abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and rash. Her last admission in Birmingham was for 4 weeks. At this point we have no diagnosis and will be traveling to the Cleveland Clinic in May for further testing. Through all of this, Katelyn has tried to remain positive, but these last 8 months have been very difficult. Even through all of this, she I will be graduating with a degree in Social Work in May 2025. Her goal is to work with children and adults who have been through difficult medical situations and be a positive influence for them.
